On the afternoon of September 18th, the School of Life Sciences invited Liu Guannan, one of its 2004 alumni, Doctor of University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Associate Professor of Nanjing University of Technology, to make a lecture entitled "Application of Synthetic Biology in the Field of Breeding, Medicine and Pharmacy" in the 413 recording studio of Houde Building. Teachers and some students from the School of Life Sciences, and the Institute of Biophysics attended the lecture.

Liu Guannan first introduced the concept and basic ideas of synthetic biology, and then illustrated the important influence of synthetic biology through examples, such as, the improvement of the taste of tomato and the adjustment of intestinal microflora. Professor Liu talked about his own projects concerning the application of synthetic biology: Cell fusion achieves large-scale genetic transfer, research on the molecular development mechanism of renal dysplasia genes, and development of dual-antibody drugs IL2-PDL1. After the lecture, the teachers, students, and Professor Liu discussed professional technical issues and hot topics in synthetic biology research, and hoped to cooperate in the improvement of key technologies for cell fusion.

In the end, Professor Liu hoped the students to have a solid grasp of professional basic knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry during the undergraduate years, which will be more beneficial to the development of scientific research at the graduate level. The students stated that they would not disappoint the expectations of the senior schoolmate. They will study hard and strive for admission to graduate school to continue their studies.
